However, despite all this prep work, in some cases the paint may not adhere to the surface as expected or may not appear smooth. This is where primer comes into play.

What is a primer? The answer to this question, in the simplest terms, can be found as a paint that is applied before the top coat. Its main purpose is to create a smooth, even surface for the topcoat to adhere to and improve the overall appearance of the surface. While primer is usually applied over new or previously unpainted surfaces, it can also be used on repaired or sanded surfaces.

The formulation of the primer is different from that of ordinary paint. It is usually thicker and contains more solids, which helps fill in small imperfections in the surface and provides a better base for the top coat. Primers also contain special pigments and resins that help seal and protect the surface, making it more resistant to moisture and mold.

What does primer do? Primers serve multiple purposes in the painting process. Let's take a look at them together:

1. It helps create a smooth surface for the topcoat to adhere to, which means the topcoat looks better and lasts longer.

2. The primer helps seal and protect the surface, making it more resistant to moisture and mildew.

3. Primer can be used to change the color or texture of the topcoat to help the final topcoat color look better.

4. The primer helps ensure an even layer of topcoat so that uneven spots do not appear.

5. It fills cracks or crevices, giving the main color layer an ultra-smooth finish.

6. The primer also seals the surface and helps protect it from moisture penetration or rust.

7. The primer has stronger adhesion than ordinary paint, making it an essential process when working on metal surfaces and concrete and other materials.

So before skipping this step entirely, think about the surface you're painting and why a primer would be beneficial in your case.
