It's not complicated if you prep the walls and paint before you start creating the gradient effect.

Choosing shades to create a gradient effect can be tricky, especially if you want to fade from one 

color to another. If you are unsure which color is right for you, try consulting a color wheel or contact a Diamond Vogel salesperson near you. Similar colors or colors that share a single base color and are next to each other on the color wheel mix well. Pick two adjacent shades on the color wheel for a subtle effect. If you're looking for a more dramatic effect, skip a shade and go for a color on either side. If you plan to stick to variations of a single color, you'll want to choose both light and dark shades of that color. Remember, the more dramatic the color difference, the more dramatic the result. For example, for a soft, soothing effect, you could pair a pale pastel with a mid-tone of another color, or choose a single-tone paint and mix it with white. If you like a bold look, delve deeper into the color spectrum, starting with light to mid-tones and ending with richer colors.

1、确定颜色流动的方向

Decide which way to direct the flow of color. Transitioning from dark at the bottom to light at the top 

makes the ceiling seem higher and the space appear larger. Transitioning from light at the bottom to dark at the top can make a large room feel cozier.

Apply an even coat of white primer to the wall using a standard roller and brush. Beginners should consider using textured paper. Cover baseboards and other trim with textured paper before applying the primer. Let the primer dry completely. When the primer is dry, wash the rollers, brushes, and trays and allow them to dry so they are ready for the painting step.

Use a tape measure, pencil, and ruler to divide the wall into three equal horizontal sections. Measure vertically and make light pencil marks for each section. Use a ruler and pencil to draw a shallow horizontal line on the mark.

Similar to the primer step, you can use paint masking to protect the baseboards and ceiling, or use a small brush and dark paint to cut around the base of the wall, then use a lighter color to cut in along the ceiling. Let the paint dry.

Set up three paint trays, with a dark color in one and a lighter color in the other. Using a measuring cup and bucket or a recycled container, mix two colors in equal parts, mix a third color, then stir thoroughly with a paint stir stick and pour the mixed paint into a third paint tray.

Use a paint roller to paint the bottom portion of the wall with your darkest color. Keep the paint edge about 3cm below the lower horizontal pencil line. No need to wait for the paint to dry, immediately roll the middle part with the mixed paint, then the top part with the lightest paint. Use a different roller for each color. Keep each strip of paint 3cm from the marked line, creating 6cm wide strips of bare (primed) wall between sections.

Use a large dry brush to blend the two colors between the bottom and middle sections, using crossed X strokes to paint in the strips between the sections. Work quickly so the paint doesn't dry out. Do the same with a different dry brush to blend the middle and top parts. Mix as much as you want, but be quick so the paint doesn't dry before it's mixed. After mixing, allow the paint to dry completely.

If you are mixing a single color with white or two completely different colors such as blue and green, you will need more than three color sections. Choose an odd number such as five, seven or nine. The more parts you create, the more gradual the color change. Start by combining equal parts of the two original paint colors to create a custom half mix. If you have seven parts, mix six cups of light paint and six cups of dark paint. Paint the center portion of the wall with a half-and-half mix. Add one cup of the dark paint to the mixed paint, mix well, and roll the area under the center section. Add another cup of darker to the remaining shades and scroll down to the next section. Repeat for the bottom, then use a dry brush to blend adjacent areas using the "X" cross-painting method. Mix another batch of half-and-half mix paint and repeat the same process, starting with the middle section and working your way up. For each section, add a cup of the lighter color to the paint mixture so that the color becomes softer as the paint mix rises.

If you look online, you may find that some people choose to use spray paint to create gradient effects, but this method of painting is mostly used on objects like lamps and picture frames, not walls. Gradients are best applied over large areas when you can apply wet paint between two colors using roller or brush paint. With a spray paint can, you can vary the concentration of the spray at the border between two areas by moving the spray closer or further away from the object. A paint sprayer works the same, but when it mists the paint, you waste more paint, and the spray goes everywhere, needs to be masked and covers everything, including furniture, trim, floors and ceilings in the room.
